Deaths prompt recall of 1 million baby slings

From The Baltimore Sun:

More than 1 million Infantino baby slings have been recalled after three babies died in the carriers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This comes after the CPSC warned parents and caregivers March 12 to be cautious with babies under 4 months old in sling carriers regardless of the brand because of the suffocation risk. In the last two decades, at least 14 babies have died while riding in an infant sling, 12 of which were under 4 months.

Many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold. Therefore, CPSC urges parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those with low weight to use extra care and consult their pediatricians about using slings.

The fabric of the carrier can block their nose and mouths, causing death within minutes. Also, their airways can become restricted while their bodies are curled up in the carriers, according to the CPSC.
