Plaintiffs claim Fixodent and Poligrip causes neuropathy

Neuropathy is damage to a single nerve or nerve group, which results in loss of movement, sensation, or other function. Plaintiffs in the Fixodent lawsuit claim that their neuropathy is linked to using the denture cream, which contains high levels of zinc.

In small amounts, zinc is not dangerous.  Excessive exposure can cause an individual to become deficient in the mineral copper.  If the body is deprived of copper for a long period of time, neurological problems such as neuropathy can result.  Most of the problems with Fixodent have occurred when consumers have used large amounts of the product over a long period of time to keep poorly fitting dentures in place.

Because Fixodent is considered to be a Class 1 medical product, the Food and Drug Administration does not require warning labels for the product. More than 35 million Americans use adhesives such as Fixodent and Poligrip to keep their dentures in place.

Symptoms of neuropathy vary, but may include:

  • Numbness or tingling of the feet, legs, hands, and/or arms
  • A reduction in strength or ability to move legs, feet, arms or hands
  • Unexplained pain in the extremities
  • A tendency to stumble or fall down; instability and lack of balance
  • Change or decrease in walking stride
  • Abnormal blood pressure or heart rate
  • Reduced ability to perspire

If you have the symptoms of neuropathy and are a user of denture cream such as Fixodent or Poligrip you should contact your doctor and a lawyer and speak to them about your situation.  You may be able to receive a compensation for your condition.
